The Islamics Solidarity Games is a multinational, multi-sport event. The Games involve the elite athletes from the National Olympic Committees in Islamic countries. The Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) is the organization that is responsible for the direction and control of the Islamic Solidarity Games.

The first Islamic Solidarity Games was held in 2005 in Saudi Arabia. A second event, originally scheduled to take place in October 2009 in Iran, and later re-scheduled for April 2010, then it was canceled. The next, third Games took place in 2013 in Palembang, Indonesia. 41 member countries were represented at the Games.

The 8th General Assembly of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) had been held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on July 21-25 in 2013. "Baku-2017 Bid Book" was also presented at the assembly. Voting was held at the assembly and decision was unanimously passed on holding the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Azerbaijan in 2017.

BAKU WILL HOST ISLAMIC SOLIDARITY GAMES IN 2017

The 8th General Assembly of Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on July 21-25, 2013.The Vice President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Vice President of ISSF Chingiz Huseynzada, the Head of International Relations Department and Executive Director of the Baku 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games Organizing Committee Konul Nurullayeva, and the National Olympic Committee’s specialist for International programs and the member of the working group of Islamic Solidarity Games Mehman Karimov attended the meeting with the presentation about the city. As part of the Assembly the “Baku 2017 candidature book” was presented. The presentation provided broad information about the book.

The candidature book includes the sections about the vision and concept of the Games, political and economic situation, legal aspects, customs and immigration matters, environment and meteorology, finances, marketing and communication, sporting facilities and competitions, residential properties, transport, security, medical services and doping control. The participants watched a special video clip about the Islamic Games and received print materials.

The important point is that the NOCs as members of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation voted for Azerbaijan to host the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in 2017 and by the majority of the votes it was decided to hold the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Azerbaijan in 2017.

The session also assigned a new composition of ISSF for 2013-2017 and Chingiz Huseynzada was re-elected a Vice-President of ISSF for the following 4 years. At the same time, on the basis of organisational changes the session adopted a historical decree by electing Konul Nurullayeva as the first female member of the Executive Committee since 1968. Thus, Azerbaijan is the only country represented in the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation by two members.

Organizing Committee of 4th Islamic Solidarity Games

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on September 17, 2015 on the establishment of the Organizing Committee for the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku in 2017. According to the decree, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the member of the Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO, Mehriban Aliyeva has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the Baku City Mayor’s Office and Azerbaijan’s National Olympic Committee, is due to prepare a special action plan and present it to the Organizing Committee, which in turn is due to solve necessary issues of the holding of the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku in 2017.
